Pyruvate
is made in our bodies and is a key step in the metabolism of sugar
(glucose) into energy. Some people, like bodybuilders or others in
training, use this supplement to try to increase the transport of
glucose into muscle cells.
In one study on it use in weight loss at a dose of 6 grams per day there was an
association with a weight loss of 2 lb 10 oz after 6 weeks. This study
only had 26 people, and they exercised 3 days per week.
The
weight loss
mentioned above was the difference from the placebo group. However, the
total lean body mass was not different between the two groups. This
does not support using it to build muscle mass. Other studies
have shown no weight loss with pyruvate.
It can cause gastrointestinal side effects like gas, bloating, and
diarrhea. To try to avoid these problems, manufacturers combine it with
calcium, sodium, or magnesium.
